Calvin Wallace Applewhite was born March 3, 1924 in Stillwater, OK at home on Duck at Knoblock Street during the time his parents were taking classes at Oklahoma State University. Calvin grew up on the farm his grandfather Calvin Applewhite bought in 1903 in the Lone Star community 12 miles north of Lockney, TX. Goree Calvin Applewhite his father was a farmer, teacher and itinerant Baptist Minister. Felicia Wallace Applewhite his mother was a Librarian and English teacher. He had two younger sisters Myra Buryl Applewhite and Felicia Louise Applewhite.
Cal found his love for woodworking from his instructor, John P. Gillis, in High School at the Teachers College in Canyon, TX. In February of 1943 he signed up for the Army and after 2 1/2 years of fighting for our country in the Battle of the Bulge, Central Europe, Northern France and the Beach of Normandy he returned in 1945 to pursue his education in Math at West Texas State University now to his great delight part of A&M University. He found his former woodworking instructor still teaching and continued shop classes.
In 1948 he met Patsy Ann Sutton at a school dance and they married 3 months later on January 28, 1949. They were married 66 years at the time of her death in 2015. They have a son Jack Calvin Applewhite and daughter Andis Eve Applewhite. Cal taught high school math two years in Canadian, TX then went on to build Quonset Barns in West Texas and New Mexico. He was hired by Celanese Chemical at their new plant in Pampa, TX and in 1960 transferred to help start up the new plant in Bay City. In 1965 he quit and moved to Pasadena, TX where he eventually started his engineering firm Project Specialists, Inc. and after 24 years of business sold out to his partner in 1989. March 17, 2017 he married Mercy Garcia and embraced her son Bryan James Gloria and daughter Katherine Aubrey Gloria and her daughter’s son Calvin Wallace Gloria into his new family. He loved being surrounded by them and loved playing “Indians” and “It” with little Calvin. He counted himself the luckiest guy ever. Cal had a strong life force and interest in a number of things but at the foundation of his life was his great faith in and love for God and was ready to go on to be with Him.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019 at Houston National Cemetery at 11:00am.
