In Memory of
Carl Green Thurman
-

Carl Green Thurman, born Jan 23, 1912, passed away on August 3, 2015 in Sugar Land TX. He was born in Summers, Arkansas to James Edgar Thurman and Margaret Craven Thurman.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Allen G. Thurman, James Thurman, and Guy Thurman; and his first wife & mother of his children, Maxine Means Thurman.

Carl was a proud Air Force WWII veteran who served in Australia, after which he continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He never went anywhere without his WWII VETERAN cap and he loved the attention that it brought him when he went out to restaurants. He earned a degree in Botany and later went to Pharmacy school. He raised his family in Pasadena, TX. When he retired, he moved to New Braunfels.

Carl and his first wife, Maxine, loved to travel, and visited Europe, Africa and Thailand on their voyages. When Maxine passed away, he found a new traveling companion in wife Marilyn. They spent many summers in Ruidoso, New Mexico and went on a Caribbean cruise for his 100th birthday.

Golf was a passion of his; as well as all African animals due to his time spent in that area. His favorite film in the whole world was Crocodile Dundee, probably due to his time spent in Australia during the war. He loved ice cream, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, fried catfish, onion rings and Fritos.

He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels serving as a greeter, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and also participated in the Sunshine Singers Group.

In 2014, he and Marilyn relocated to Colonial Oaks Assisted Living in Sugar Land.

He is survived by the second love of his life, Marilyn Hatchett Thurman, daughter Margaret Ellen Bruce and husband Roger Bruce, and son Thomas Carl Thurman and wife, Melody Hamilton. He is survived by sister-in-law Jane Brummett and husband Ralph; his stepchildren, Nancy Cederberg and husband Bob, and Kay Willis and husband Rick. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stacey Griffis, Abey Bruce, Andrea Ross, Sabrina Bruce, Thomas Carl Thurman Jr., and Vanessa Thurman Kendall; step grandchildren, Jennifer Cederberg Melson & Kristen Cederberg Bufton, Kelly Erin Grey & Lauren Grey Reed; great grand children, Ashley & Nate Griffis; Lydia, Christian & Phineas Bruce; Ryan & Reagan Ross; Daniel & Amber Thurman; and Cheyne Kendall and step great grandchildren Jay & Kyle Melson and Finley Jo Bufton.

A special thanks to Gloria Wildberger and Pat Tuch of New Braunfels, and all the staff at Colonial Oaks who provided Carl with such loving care in his final years.

A visitation for friends and family will be held at Beresford Funeral Service on August 6, 2015 from 12 NOON to 2 PM with a memorial service following at 2 PM. An interment ceremony will be held at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park (2951 South State Highway 46) in New Braunfels on August 7, 2015 at 10 AM, for family and close friends.

Uncle Carl was such a fine man. He lived a long full life for which we are grateful, but he will be missed. He is walking on the streets of Gold now with his Maxine and Jesus.

Granddad will be missed. He always had a butterscotch in his pocket for me, and saved my life when I was six and tried to choke on one. He had pretend "spankings" for us because he never believed we needed real ones. He never told us "No". He loved my Grandmothers and showed us all what commitment is. He lived long and well, and is finally home.

We extend our sympathy during this time of loss and pray that you will find comfort and peace in the presence of the Lord. We would love to have known your father, Meg, but feel we have known a little of him through the awesome daughter and their families that he loved. Sending our love and prayers, Leroy and Nancy Tinnean

Margaret, we have such fond memories of your Dad starting in 1972 when we moved to the river. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend. We never saw Carl without a smile. When our son was three, Steve started riding his tricycle down the road to your parents house to help get rid of the "sticker burs" in the yard. Your Dad was so grace-us to put up with a little boy full of questions. Our last memories that we will cherish are of our visits at Alto Frio. Your Dad will truly be missed and we are so glad he was part of our lives!

I did not know Uncle Carl had passed away until now. I missed the message. That doesn't mean that I don't grieve now. He was a precious man and my Dad's brother. I've been around Uncle Carl all these years and he was always a delightful, upbeat, fine Christian man. He always greeted me with kindness and sweetness, glad to see me. He continued to be gracious even when he lived in the Assisted Living Home. He is now young and free of illness and lived his 103 1/2 years well ~ such a proud Veteran. He has now received his Heavenly rewards.
