Doralice Cálad de Moreno, 79, was welcomed into the arms of Our Lord on April 4, 2018. While
her health was failing, her faith and spirit remained strong until the end. She passed away
peacefully in her home, with family at her side.
She was born on February 8, 1939 in Colombia, South America to Bernardo and Graciela
Cálad. At the age of 17, faced with the untimely passing of her mother, she stepped up to
provide and care for her siblings. That take-charge, self-sacrificing role was one that she held
throughout her life; she would later become a loyal wife, a caring mother, and the most loving of
grandmothers.
In 1974, she met Álvaro M. Moreno, also of Colombia, in Brooklyn, New York. They were
married in March 1975 and welcomed their first daughter, Joanna Karina, the following January.
Seeking better opportunities, they moved to Texas in 1978, settling in Houston a year later,
where they welcomed their second daughter, Maritza Michelle.
Doralice was a talented seamstress and fashion designer, truly blessed with the ability to create
works of art with her hands. She was beautiful inside and out; her beaming smile, hearty laugh,
feisty nature, and endless affection radiated from her huge heart. She had her special way of
brightening up your day with a genuine compliment, a helping hand, or her silly sense of humor.
She was amazed by the wondrous, beautiful details in the world around her. She loved nature,
music, and had a soft spot for animals. She enjoyed life, especially the company of loved ones,
and treasured the sentimental things in life more than gold. Above all things, Doralice was a
woman of faith, ever grateful for God’s blessings and loving guidance, and had a life-long
devotion to the Virgin Mary. She will be greatly missed, but her virtues and her loving spirit will
live on indefinitely.
Doralice was preceded in death by her parents, Bernardo Cálad and Graciela Bonilla, younger
brothers Álvaro, Bernardo, Rodrigo, and Mario, and her husband Álvaro M. Moreno. She is
survived by her daughter Joanna Moreno of Missouri City, her daughter Maritza Price and
husband Brian of Sugar Land, her grandchildren Adriana and Samuel Price, her older brother
Gerardo, her younger siblings Helena, Hugo, and Graciela, as well as all of her nieces,
nephews, and extended family residing in Colombia, Canada, and the United States.
