Emmett William Mitcham

Emmett William Mitcham, 94, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013 in Bryan, Texas. He was born on July 1, 1919 in Bernice, Louisiana to Arnold and Valerie Nolan Mitcham.

He is preceded by his wives, Bonnie Bess Bonner Mitcham, and Twila Ramsey Mitcham; parents, Arnold and Valerie Mitcham; sons, Charles and Ken Mitcham; and his brother, Edward Mitcham.

He is survived by his sons, Danny Mitcham and wife Charmaine, and Keith Mitcham and wife Karen; grandchildren, Troy Mitcham, Angie Nichols, Charli Baker, Jamie Hudek, Beaux Mitcham, Rachel Kemp, Brent Mitcham and Kristen Mitcham; 8 great-grandchildren; his sister, Helen Moore; and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

As a pole vaulter, he used a bamboo pole and held the record in North Louisiana by jumping 12'9", the state record was 13'. He enlisted in the United States Army on August 8, 1942 and served his country during World War II in the Pacific Campaign. He was wounded on December 24, 1944 and eventually sent home due to injuries sustained in war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

For 48 years he served at Woodhaven Baptist, Spring Woods Baptist and Houston's First Baptist Church ministering to youth, college and singles, as a Deacon and as a greeter.

God has blessed us with dad and we have always felt/known/ seen his unending true love for his wife, family and friends. Verses in his Bible that stand out: Romans 8:38-39 and Romans 10:9-10

Funeral Services are scheduled for Friday, December 27, 2103 at 11:00 AM at Houston's First Baptist Church (7401 Katy Freeway) with committal at Woodlawn Cemetery.
