John Waldrop Kenneday

Born July 21st, 1924

Went to heaven March 19th, 2017 at 92 ½ years young from complications stemming from a bone infection, something he couldn’t fix with a screwdriver, pliers and some bailing wire.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bill Kenneday and sister, Rebecca Tart as well as his first wife, Neta Haze.  Left to treasure his memory are his second wife, Loyce Elaine, his children Patty Cady, Sherry and Mike Allard, Rick Kenneday, Mark and Maria Kenneday as well as his step children Robin and Belynda Smith,  Randy and Gayla Smith and Serena and Bill Owens .  Known affectionately as Granddaddy, he is also survived by eight grandchildren and their spouses along with thirteen great grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews.

John was a pilot and World War II veteran, member of the American Legion and a Legion of Honor member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.  He graduated from the University of Florida February 4th, 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and became a registered professional engineer (PE) licensed to practice in Texas, California, Florida and Louisiana.

Through his work John and his family have been able to travel around the world and have enjoyed the various cultures and diversity.  John worked and taught in many foreign countries including Northern Africa, Australia, the Middle East, Europe, China, Japan, the Mediterranean and the South Pacific.  He had a passion for the petroleum industry and loved drilling and pumping techniques and innovations authoring training manuals and texts on both subjects.

He was an avid hunter and loved to chase the quail and turkeys which allowed him to spend time with his sons, grandsons, and great grandchildren.  He raised hunting dogs, lots of hunting dogs and they were always there by his side.  His summer vacations were legendary and each one more memorable than the last.  But nothing gave him more pleasure than living on the lake where he could putter around the yard, tend to his fruit trees, watch the water and birds and smell the breeze.  Whether catching crappie on Lake Tawakoni, or white bass and catfish on Lake Houston, or back on the white sands of Mustang Island catching trout and redfish, or hunting in West Texas, Granddaddy lived life to the fullest.  Lord, here is a good man and deserving of your grace.  We loved him in this world and want you to love and watch over him in yours.  I’m sure even heaven could use a little jerry rigging from time to time.
