In Memory of
Joseph G Apostol
-

Joseph G. Apostol went with our Lord on July 7, 2011. He was born on April 20, 1939 to George and Georgia Apostol, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Powell, Kris Giannopoulos, his nephew, Jeffrey Giannopoulos, and his niece, Lisa Powell. He is survived by his wife, Libby Apostol, sister Fon Apostol, daughter Noelle Apostol, and nieces: Debbie Mustafoglu, Georgeanne Giannopoulos-Hyatt, Jennifer Young-Werchan, and nephews: Cliff Powell and Adam Young.

Joe was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, raised in the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church and graduated from Northeast High School in 1957. He immediately enrolled in Central State College at Edmond, Oklahoma, and graduated with a degree in Biology & Chemistry on May 30, 1963. He then went on to University of Oklahoma’s School of Cytology, and upon graduation, Joe went to work at Norman Municipal Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma.

In 1979, Joe’s experience in his field landed him a position in Houston with MPC Laboratories. After serving several years with MPC, Joe accepted his first position of several in the Texas Medical Center at MD Anderson and worked there for nearly 10 years making many lifelong friends. He left MD Anderson in 1995 to manage the cytology laboratory for OGA Associates and later worked at Baylor College of Medicine. On April 30, 2005, Joe retired from his positions at OGA Associates and Baylor College of Medicine.

Joe was passionate about life and never met a stranger. He was very active in the Greek community, loved spending time with his family and had many fond and proud memories of his daughter, Noelle. Joe had many interests and talents – he had a beautiful voice and he had his own Greek band – The Ya’ssous, where he played the clarinet and danced. Prior to moving to Houston, Joe owned a nursery and landscaping business in Oklahoma. Later in life, Joe collected and sold antique furniture and loved restoring old stained glass pieces. In between work and all of his hobbies, Joe also found time to fish with his nephews.

In 2006, Joe was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He battled this dreadful disease tirelessly, with a great sense of humor and with much dignity. Now that we have come to the end of Joe’s life on earth, his memory is buried deep in our hearts. Until we meet again, rest in peace my love.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3511 Yoakum Blvd., Houston, TX 77006. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society.

Joe is the most courages person I know battling his last few years with Parkinsons. We enjoyed so many visits at Caney Creek in Sargent Texas. The most memorable time was when Henry, Garrett and Joe went fishing on a beautiful Spring afternoon. They took off for East Matagorda Bay around 2:00 and did not return until dark. The men were fishing and in rolled the "Fog". You could say they were lost in the bay. This was Garret's first time in the bay and needless to say he was scared. However Joe and Henry some how found the sea shore and found themselves freezing and hungry. Joe as nicely dressed as he always looked did not have a change of clothes and wore Henry's old blue jeans with holes in the knees and pockets and a faded white t-shirt. Now if that was not a sight to see. We laughed so hard because Joe was trying so hard to look neat and clean.
Although we never understand why some things happened Joe always had a story to brighten the grey skies. He will always be the "Sunshine" in our lives.

I actually knew Joe through his lovely wife, Libby. On the few occasions I spoke with Joe, he was pleasant, entertaining, uplifting and clearly a strong and courageous individual. Having known Libby as a good friend over the years has allowed me to see the profound admiration and respect she had for her husband and best friend. Each story Libby has ever shared about their lives together has been filled with joy and laughter and has always been evident of their love and devotion to and for one another. I know Joe will be sorely missed by many. I am happy to have known Joe and pray that the memories he so graciously created and shared with his family and friends will carry each of you through this difficult time. My sincere condolences for your loss.

I have known and worked with Joe in the Cytology profession for many years. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met. I remember one day telling him that our best friends only son had died in a car wreck. Joe was so sympathetic, that we both ended up crying. He was just that type of a man. We will miss him, his smile and his laugh.

I hadn't seen Joe in over 30 yrs. but my memories of Joe were one who always was kind, considerate and valued his relationships. We played clarinet together in a Greek band his brother-in-law and sister formed and he helped provide some fond memories of my young adult life. My prayers for strength to his family and friends

My name is Lili (Thomas) Lambakis, and I would like to extend by deepest condolences to you and yours for your loss. Joe and I grew up together here at St. George in OKC and spent some wonderful, fun times together with our little "gang". Joe who was in the band which his brother-in-law George and late sister Kris formed, played at my wedding back in 1968 and they were great!

I hadn't seen Joe in many years, but often asked about him when I would come to Houston to visit my son Fr. Michael and I was so pleased when he told me that he had gone to see Joe prior to his passing.

Libby, I have heard nothing but kind words about you. Joe was so fortunate to have had you in his life. Eternal be his memory and may God grant comfort to you and yours during your time of grief.

I was honored and blessed to spend time with Joe during the last weeks of his life on earth before he went HOME to be with Our Lord. In that short amount of time, I witnessed the extraordinary gift of unconditional love that Libby and Joe have for each other.
Libby, my hope and prayer is that you find peace and understanding in knowing that Joe's love for you is everlasting, and his spirit will live on in your heart and soul forever. Thank you for sharing your cherished memories of Joe with me.
