Alice Marie Böthel, 81, passed away Friday morning, October 2, 2015 in Houston, Texas. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Arthur Bowman and Amelia Kurtz Bowman on September 9, 1933.
She had always wanted to be a nurse and one of her earliest memories was being a nurse to her collection of dolls. She graduated from Paterson General Hospital as a registered nurse and from there attended Bible College in Rhode Island where she met and later married Don Böthel in 1958. They were both of the same mind regarding missions and soon joined Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society and relocated to France for language study in 1960. Their oldest, Paul, was born that same year and by 1963 they were located in Katiola, République de Côte d'Ivoire, where they ministered for the next 31 years. In 1966, Jim was born. Don focused on Bible translation and Alice involved herself in the local church Sunday school before opening up her own dispensary and ministering to 90-100 people a day, three times a week, that needed spiritual and physical healing.
After retiring, Alice and Don returned to the US where they settled in Houston. Alice worked for several years at the Pregnancy Assistance Center and also continued to push for the publication of the Tagbana Bible, which Don had been responsible for translating. Finally, last year, the Tagbana Bible was published and distributed to the Tagbana-speaking people of Côte d'Ivoire.
Alice is survived by her sister Carol, of Houston, Texas, and her brother Arthur, of Missouri, her sons, Paul of Southington, CT and Jim of Rocky River, OH, as well as her two grandchildren, Gavin and Judah.
She was preceded in death by her husband Don in 2007, her parents, her sister, Evelyn, and her brother, Bill.
Services are scheduled for Tuesday, October 6 at Champion Forest Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10 AM to 12 noon with the funeral at 12 noon. Burial will be at 2:00 PM at the Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name be made to WorldVenture Bible Translation Fund.
