Barbara Salmond Martin, 71, of Missouri City, Texas, passed away on February 21, 2012 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 30, 1940 to Duncan and Jessie Salmond.
Barbara graduated from the University of Virginia School of Nursing and began a long, rewarding career as a nurse. She met her husband, Jerry Dale Martin while at the University of Virginia and they married on August 31, 1963. Over the next 22 years, Barbara moved frequently with her husband, who was in the Air Force. They retired in San Antonio, later moving to Missouri City.
Barbara was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church Missouri City. Barbara volunteered for the Girl Scouts, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Dale Martin; two daughters, Juli Ann Salzman and
Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church Missouri City on Monday February 27th at 10:00 am, with private family viewing preceding at 9:30 am. Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 29th at Houston National Cemetery at 11:00 am. Pallbearers will be Guy Martin, Wilson Martin, Jeff Rainwater, Justin Rainwater, Elliott Ruben, Gregg Ruben, and John Salzman.
In lieu of flowers, Barbara’s wishes were that she be remembered through a donation used to support the MDACC program for young children of cancer patients. Memorial donations may be made to:

I just heard the sad news from Laura. I'm so sorry for your loss. I won't be able to attend her service since I'm leaving for California on Saturday and will be gone for one week. I will miss her in the Hospitality Center and at the Survivor Conference. She is better off now, a life without pain. We celebrate her life as we suffer with our pain.
Although I had been in contact with Barbara for only one year, I was deeply saddened to hear of her passing. Sharing the same ancestors gave us a kinship which overcame the distance between us. Even though I have never met Barbara, our correspondence has enabled me to feel a real warmth towards her. I will miss our emails.

I came to know Barbara as Jerry's wife, but learned to enjoy and respect her. I know she was a good wife and mother and I'm sorry she will no longer be spouse of the class of 56 but she will always be in our memories.
