The family moved to the Houston Heights in 1926 where she was baptized at the Baptist Temple by T. C. Jester. She attended public school in the Heights and graduated from Reagan High School. While working at the Texas State Hotel, she met her future husband, Maurice Newlin, a pitcher for the San Antonio Missions. They married in April of 1942 while Maurice was serving in the U. S. Navy. Edith is survived by her daughter Vicki Elmore-Smith and husband Don Smith; her son Rick Newlin and partner Keith Davis; three grandchildren, Chris Elmore, Casey Schuhmacher and husband Darren, John Elmore and wife Stephanie; and five great-grandchildren, Henry, Sam, Georgia, Emily and Claire; and her brother Harry Outlaw.

After a long career in the retail business and after her husband’s death in 1978, she began her second career as a volunteer at Cy-Fair Hospital. In 2005, she retired as the hospital’s oldest volunteer with over 9,000 volunteer hours of service. A celebration of Edith’s life will be held at the Jersey Village Baptist Church located at 16518 Jersey Drive on October 2, 2009 with Pastor Ed Hogan officiating. Edith trained me in the gift shop at the hospital. We kidded about the fact that she could see an empty spot on the shelves before she came into the shop. I loved her very much. Catherine Scott

Edith was such a lovely, hardworking, younghearted person. She came to me as a new volunteer when I was the Volunteer Coordinator at Cy-Fair. I really enjoyed being with her. She was much younger than her years and she took good care of me when she worked at the desk in the gift shop and I was at my little desk in the backroom. She loved the gift shop and all the volunteers. She also loved the all the young women who worked at the hospital at the time. And nobody messed with her gift shop, not even me! She took care of me when I was pregnant with my son and had morning sickness for what seemed like eternity. Every day,all day long. She was smart, independent, and loving. After I moved to Chicago, I always enjoyed visiting her at her home in Jersey Village and seeing all the new pictures of her children and grandchildren. She was so proud. She was a working woman who was proud of the job she did, whatever it was, her whole life. I am proud to have known her and had her in my life. Love you, Edith. Jamie Blundell Edith, I thought you would live forever!

Edith was a dear friend of mine also, from the wonderful days of CyFair Hospital. After our friend Jamie left as Volunteer Coordinator, I stepped in to continue with the program that included our gift shop - I guess I should say Edith's gift shop. We laughed, smiled, frowned and on occassion cried - but we always had each other to share.
I was blessed in visiting Edith in Boerne on a couple of occassions - her smile will stay with me forever. My sincere sympathy goes to each and every member of her family.

I was fortunate to meet Edith through my Mother, Phyllis Dominik who worked with Edith at the gift shop at the hospital. I then started going to Jersey Village Church and sat with Edith and other ladies. She was a very strong willed woman, gave you "her opinion" and was as sweet as she could be, which I admired. I'm glad I crossed paths with her during her time here on earth.

What a wonderful Aunt. She and my grandparents were the role models for me and my sister when we were children. I loved the times we spent with her. The summer I was 16 I spent 6 weeks in Rolla, MO with Aunt Edith, Rick and Eileen (Vicki) who were 2 and 4 years old. Maurice was working there and we came back to Texas in their new Hudson Hornet. I will miss her very much.
Love, Shirley

Rest peacefully, Edith. May all of your family be at peace, as well.
