In Memory of
Floydell Cotten Evans
-

On March 30, 1929 Willie and Cora Cotten were blessed with their fifth child when Floydell Cotten was born.  She passed into Jesus’s presence at 3:10 AM September 29th, 2019 at the age of 90 years and six months.  Floydell was one of seven children living deep in the Big Thicket between Camp Ruby and Dallardsville.  She attended Big Sandy High School where she was proud to receive an award for perfect attendance having never missed a single day of school.

Floydell is survived by her oldest son Gary Lynn Evans Sr. and his wife Sharon and their son Gary Lynn Evans Jr. and his wife Callie and their children Caden Walker, Maxwell Ryan, and Anabelle Louetta.  She is also survived by her youngest son Kyle Wayne Evans and his wife Joann and their children Tracy Lynn Evans Garrison and husband Daniel and their children David Nathaniel, Kevin Michael, and Matthew Keith.  Kyle and Joann’s youngest daughter is Rachel Jane Evans.

Floydell’s remaining sibling is her brother Don Earlon Cotten and his wife Barbara.

Known during most of her adult life as Flo: she was preceded in death by her parents Willie and Cora Cotten; brothers Chester and Melvin Glen and sisters Elsie, Trudie and Novelle.

Flo and Novelle moved to Houston where they began their careers working in the East side of Houston at the telephone company.  Flo worked as a PBX operator and moved into several jobs with those skills.  She attended a business school where she used her education and became a secretary and office manager.  In 1969 she was recruited by Prudential Insurance company and became the first female sales agent.  She worked hard and received many awards for meeting and exceeding sales goals.  Many people benefitted from her skill at getting them the coverage needed.  She was always happy to help families keep their coverage in force.  Many times, she was able to deliver benefit checks to families after the loss of a loved one.  She believed this was a great service to the community.  Flo retired from insurance in 1989 to pursue a realtor’s license.  She also was able to devote more time to quilting, antiquing and her church.

Flo was a regular member and contributor to Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Sugar Land where she was a member of the choir and many Bible study classes. Flo was always concerned for her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She wanted them to have Christian educations and to learn to save money and invest for the future.  Flo was fiercely independent and would fight all comers to protect her family.

Flo was blessed with remarkable beauty that she carried with poise and grace her entire life.  She had a wonderful singing voice and could put most anyone at ease in just a few minutes of conversation.   In later years she was able to live quietly backed up to a golf course.  All those oak trees and grass and no yard work required.  She loved nature and the woods.  The golf course gave her many types of birds to watch and the squirrels would perform their antics for her.  Of course, the free meals she provided daily kept them interested.

It is hard to condense a Christian life well lived into a single sheet of paper.  Flo was a committed Christian who loved the forest and nature.  A friend to all and a gentle soul who never did anything to bring discredit to her parents or her children or her Savior Christ Jesus.
