
Garry Clinton McMillan, age 78, died on Thursday, September 30, 2021, from complications of a long-term illness. Garry was born on March 9, 1943, in Battlecreek, Michigan. Born to Rhea Virginia Brewer McMillan and Estel Clinton “Babe” McMillan, he was the brother of Monty McMillan.
Garry attended grade school in Avon Park, FL, 1950-1954. In 1955 his family moved to Prince Georgia, VA where he completed his 6th-10th grade years. In 1960 Garry’s family moved to Chillicothe, Ohio where he completed his education at Chillicothe High.
An accomplished athlete, Garry was recruited to the University of Wisconsin in 1961 to play Center on the offensive line. In 1962 he moved to Texarkana College where he continued his collegiate athletic career as a member of the Fighting Bulldogs. As the Center on the offensive line, he was honored by achieving the awards of “All Dallas Morning News Player for Texas” and “All Texas College Football Player” during 1962 & 1963 seasons.
Leaving Texarkana, he accepted a football scholarship to Trinity University in San Antonio, TX where he finished out his collegiate career in football as their starting Center. He graduated with a B.A. in History and was a member of the private fraternal organization, the Trinity Bengal Lancers.
In 1968, Garry became the Assistant Varsity Football Coach at the Texas Military Institute in the heart of San Antonio, TX. A year later he became Varsity Football coach and served until 1973. In August of 1968, Garry married Venita Driggars and in 1970 gave birth to their only child, Lance Clinton McMillan.
From 1974 through his retirement in 2007, Garry began his 33 year legacy as the Head Varsity Football Coach, Athletic Director, and History teacher at The Kinkaid School in Houston, TX. Known as Coach Mac, he coached and mentored students in almost every sport that The Kinkaid School offered as well as served as Dean of Boys in the Upper School for years. During his career at The Kinkaid School, beloved Coach Mac’s teams won 16 SPC football titles (224-72-3___an amazing 75.7% win percentage) and under his leadership, the Boys Golf Team began a 15 year tradition of excellence that continues today.
On September 21, 2021 Kinkaid celebrated the 7th year of The McMillan Character Education Series, named in Coach Mac’s honor. The series embodies his character, integrity, enthusiasm, love of youth, and love of The Kinkaid School.
Garry was predeceased by his parents, Estel “Babe” and Rhea Virginia McMillan, and brother Monty McMillan. He is survived by his son Lance McMillan, his daughter in-law Brenda McMillan, and his grandchildren Cole McMillan, Alexis McMillan, Reid McMillan, and Harper McMillan.
On October 19, 2021, a private memorial service will be held at Grace Bible Church, 6325 Hurst Street, Houston, Texas, 77008 at noon; followed by a public Celebration of Life at The Kinkaid School, 201 Kinkaid School Drive, Houston, TX 77024 at 6:30PM. We welcome you to join us to honor Garry “Coach Mac” at this time.
