Loving Tribute to George Dentler by his daughters
George Ellis Dentler was a kind, loving and supportive husband, father, and friend. He was a big man, with a big smile and even bigger heart with arms that opened to so many throughout his entire life. He smiled constantly, but what made him happiest was when he was able to make others smile.
George was a doting husband to Sue and tremendously supportive and proud father of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; a man that would do anything for anyone. He would do whatever it took to try and find a solution to a problem or situation, someone you knew you could go to in a time of need.
George provided many memorable moments with jokes, stories, singing, and his love of life. There were trips to the bay house, summer vacations to Port Aransas and Rock Port, the UT, Oiler and St. Thomas football games, mini bikes, the rodeo, trail rides, boats, horses, dinners-out, and numerous other events; along with the infamous RV excursions. This and more was done not only for personal enjoyment but mostly for others of us to enjoy.
George was born to Ellis and Nellie Dentler on May 4, 1930 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Houston, Texas. He was the owner and operator of Pier 21 restaurant on Fannin, in the Texas Medical Center area, for over 50 years. He was the grandson of the founder of George H. Dentler & Sons that started the Dentler Potato Chip Company, as well as a former owner himself. George served on the Citizens Relationship Committee that helped organize the peaceful integration of Houston public restaurants in the early 1960’s. Pier 21 served as one of the initial businesses to be integrated during
that historic event.
George attended San Jacinto High School in Houston, where he played football. He then attended Georgia Tech University on a football scholarship, and later attended the University of Houston where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He served as President of the Houston Restaurant Association from 1960-1961. He was a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, as well as a long standing member of the Steer Auction Committee, a past member of the Tejas Vaqueros and Salt Grass Trail Ride, Wagon 8 (the Lazy 8)
Preceded in death by parents Ellis & Nellie Dentler and sister Eloise Dentler Pemberton Cheeseman.
The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of love, concern, and kindness to them during this time of bereavement. May God bless and keep you.

Loving Tribute to George Dentler by his son
George Ellis Dentler, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Houston on October 27, 2011. He was a big man, with a big smile, a big heart and arms that opened wide for so many family and friends for so many years. A restaurateur for over 50 years he owned and operated Pier 21 Restaurant on Fannin, in the Texas Medical Center area. (During the early sixties, George served on a committee that included Leon Jaworski and Jack Valenti that helped to organize the peaceful integration of Houston public accommodations. Pier 21 served as one of the initial businesses to be integrated during that effort.)
George was a supportive and proud father, grandfather and great-grand father but most especially, for 60 years, a very doting and loving husband to his wife, Sue. What a couple!

All of this and more done mostly for others of us to enjoy. He liked to smile, and what made him happiest was when what he did, made (you) smile.
