In Memory of
George Mack Lowery
-

George Mack Lowery was born February 12, 1934, in Covington, Tennessee. George was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters. He accepted Jesus Christ as a young man and even expressed a strong interest in going into full-time ministry. His pastor encouraged him to stay in school and go on to college, something George didn't have the patience for at that time in his young life! He attended Byars Hall High School in Covington. George left school prior to graduation to join the United States Navy during the Korean war. As a navigator on the USS Oriskany, an Essex-class aircraft carrier that was built after World War II. After a deployment to Yokosuka Japan, the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, and the area of the Philippines, he returned to the United States Naval Air Station in Alameda, California. George appeared as an extra in a major motion picture, The Bridges at Toko-Ri, filmed on the USS Oriskany in 1954. In the big fight scene between actors William Holden and Mickey Rooney, George is seen throwing a fake punch to a sailors face resulting in the sailor's hat flying off.

George's life would take a dramatic turn when he answered the phone while living in the barracks at the Naval Air Station. A young Joan Wilson had called on behalf of one of her girlfriends asking for another sailor. As fate would have it, George and Joan talked for nearly four hours! George later asked Joan to be his wife and they were married December 11,1954.

George later left the Navy and the Los Angeles area and he and Joan moved to Hollywood, Florida where he worked as a Bellhop at the Diplomat Hotel and later at the Florida East Coast Railroad.

George and Joan returned to Tennessee living in both Memphis and Nashville. In 1960, George and Joan welcomed their first child, Barbara Renee Lowery into their life. Then in 1964 their 2nd child, William Seixas Lowery, whom they nicknamed, Billy, was added to their lives.

George's first big break in corporate America came when he was hired by Texas Instruments in 1965 as an Electro-Mechanical Draftsman. This job resulted in George, Joan and children moving to Sherman, Texas where they became members of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God. In 1969 George was transferred to Houston, Texas where he, Joan, Barbara and Billy grew up as a family in the Alief area.

George and the family would become members of the Boone Road Assembly of God and later Wilcrest Baptist Church in Alief. It was during this time Billy recalled his Dad first explaining why Jesus died for our sins and how as a young man he would have to make a decision to follow Jesus as his Lord and Savior. George explained how he made that decision when he was a young man and Joan made that decision when they were attending a church in Hollywood, Florida.

George was always a hard working man and received technical training in many disciplines. He received his license as a Journeyman Electrician and was a long time member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union. He later completed training as a Stationary Engineer providing maintenance on huge 50 ton AC Units for Dresser Industries. Then, he received specialized training as a Numerical Control Technician or NC-Technician as it was called. He worked for Huges Tool Co. for over 8 years providing electrical, electronic, and mechanical maintenance on the machines that made drill bits for drilling oil wells. He then worked for another 7 years for FMC Corporation as an NC Technician until retiring in 1999.

George and Joan watched Barbara and Billy grow up, get married, and later have ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In May 2011, George held his beloved Joan in his arms as she slipped from the surely bonds of earth and touched the face of God.

On approximately August 9, 2016, George's journey on this earth came to an end as Jesus called him home for all eternity.

. . . And he will dwell in the house of the Lord, forever.
