James R. Tudyk was born on June 12, 1938 in San Antonio, Texas to Frank and Albina (Moy) Tudyk. James being the youngest of four has three older siblings: Florence, Mary and Frank. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Ruby for 48 years. Though he was born in San Antonio , most of his adult life was spent living in Houston . There he and Ruby raised their three children Laurie, Julie and James II. Not only was he a father but grandfather to Shelley, Katie, Paige, Kyle and Ashton.
Jim was known for his great sense of humor. He loved sharing a good story or joke making people come away with at least a smile or a hearty laugh. Overall you could say he loved being around people. Dad had many varied interest and was successful in most things. He enjoyed working with his hands creating wood works and ceramics. Photography and genealogy were also some of his passions and hobbies.
It seemed once he saw Alex Haley’s movie, “Roots,” dad was inspired along with most Americans to trace our family heritage. He spent countless hours looking up information. He would either be on the office computer e-mailing relatives, reading books, or visiting libraries and other archives. Even when the family was on vacation he would search out our past history. After 12 years, he compiled 3 written volumes of information. In 1992, this labor of love was then used to write his first book, “The Immigration to America From The Upper Silesian Regions of Prussia Poland 1854-1857.”
Many people of different generations have benefited from all of his hard work. His granddaughters Shelley and Katie are just a few. They were recalling how their granddad’s face would light up when he would tell them about not only his life but that of our ancestors. Our family members weren’t the only ones well informed by this publication. A copy was placed in Houston’s Polish Genealogical Society library. He wanted this to be an important part of his legacy. Not to fall by the wayside but continue on for future generations to enjoy.
In the light of tradition, just as his father, he became a member of the Knights of Columbus rising to the level of a 4th degree. As a people person he loved meeting with the guys either playing cards or helping out with their barbecue fundraisers.
These activities weren’t the only things that kept Jim busy. He was an entrepreneur of several businesses. One could learn much by observing his hard work ethics and interacting with the retail public.
As one can see there are so many different facets of his life. So many more areas others can share. The Tudyk family wants to invite Jim’s other family, friends and co-workers to help us honor his life. So please visit our website guest book and add your favorite memory or story.
