Jason Kyle Norris, 31, left this world to be in Heaven with his Lord on Monday, March 3rd, 2014 in Houston, Texas. A Woodlands, Texas area resident, Jason fought bravely against muscular dystrophy his entire life but was finally called home to rest. Doctors expected his life to end by sixteen, but through the grace of God Jason beat those odds. His legacy sets a high standard for those of us left behind.
Jason was born October 20th, 1982 in Houston, Texas. He leaves behind his loving mother, Cherie Findley Belcher and husband Joel (Conroe, Texas), and loving father Paul Kenton Norris and wife Judy (Houston, Texas). Jason is survived by his brothers, Brandon Belcher (Oxford, Mississippi) and Johnathan Belcher (Conroe, Texas); grandparents Robert and Barbara Norris (Houston, Texas), Norma Stiegler (Wimberly, Texas), and Doris Rhoads (Gatesville, Texas); numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Grandparents pre-deceasing Jason in death include John and Ann Findley, Ralph Stiegler along with Otto and Nylene Belcher.
As a child, Jason attended Step by Step Christian School, Beckendorf Intermediate, Tomball Junior High and Tomball High School all in Tomball, Texas. He enjoyed playing euphonium in the junior high band and participating in FFA in high school. Jason never let his limits define his life and was thrilled to win Grand Champion as a freshman when showing his rabbits at the Tomball FFA Fair and Auction.
Jason participated in Muscular Dystrophy Association summer camp for seventeen years and was blessed by his experiences there. At camp, he was “just” a kid and was able to play baseball, dance, swim, fish, canoe, zip line and ride horses in addition to the craziness that kids have at all camps. We will be forever grateful to those who volunteer at camp and to those who contributed to MDA to make camp possible.
As a teen, Jason had one of his dreams come true through the generosity of Make-A-Wish who sent the entire family to Hawaii. While there, Jason had the experience of a lifetime on the Big Island where he was able to swim with the dolphins which was his dream. Make-A-Wish didn’t stop there as they also arranged a helicopter tour of the islands, a charter fishing trip, a luau and a personal tour of Mauna Loa volcano and rain forest. He treasured those memories and as a family we appreciate the hard work Make-A-Wish put in to make it all possible.
One of Jason’s desires was to travel and our families worked to make that possible despite the difficulty at times of traveling with his wheelchair and other equipment. Jason’s last vacation was a cruise to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel which he thoroughly enjoyed. Many thanks to Courtney Herndon for accompanying our family on the cruise as Jason’s constant companion. Other vacation trips included Washington, DC, New Orleans, Disneyworld, Disneyland, Colorado, Las Vegas, the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas, the Texas Hill Country, San Antonio, Gulf Shores and Navarre Beach.
Jason loved sports of all kinds and could talk with anyone about any sport as he was so knowledgeable about them all. During his life he was privileged to meet Warren Moon with the Houston Oilers and Jeff Bagwell with the Houston Astros. He loved the Olympics, would watch every single event and after closing ceremony would be counting the weeks until he could see them again.
Jason also loved history and cooking. Although he could not do any cooking himself, he enjoyed coming up with recipes and then participating vicariously as family members cooked. He was so well versed about all types of food and as an adventurous eater would try anything once.
Faith was a key element of Jason’s life and he attended Woodlands Church, enjoying their praise and worship along with God’s word. When Jason still had use of his arms and hands he read the Bible from cover to cover even though at that point it took tremendous effort to turn each page. Jason was born again when he was baptized by Pastor Jack Arrington of Tomball Bible Church at the age of eleven. In a very special baptism at the home of Jerry and Kay McMullin, Jason was baptized after which the entire crowd spontaneously sang Amazing Grace as we were all touched by Jason’s situation and God’s love for His children.
In closing, Jason shined as God’s light during his time here on Earth. He saw the goodness in everyone he met and touched the lives of so many. Never once did he complain about his disabilities or pain. He knew that our Lord had a perfect plan for his life and that it was time for him to leave this earth that the Lord would take him by the hand and lead him to Heaven where he would run and dance.
We will celebrate Jason’s life on Monday, March 10th, 2014 in the Chapel in the Woods at Woodlands Church, One Fellowship Way, The Woodlands, Texas 77384. Pastor Conn McWhorter will officiate. Visitation to begin at noon with the funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m.
