Jo Ann Caton, 93 passed away peacefully on Friday, January 3rd, 2025. She led a blessed life and was a very willing and faithful servant to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jo was born in Los Angelos, CA to Eugene and Mary Meeler. For many years she and her younger sister Mary loved to attend the annual Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, and she often talked about remembering the beauty and aroma of the intricate floats made entirely of flowers and other vegetation. She enjoyed watching the parade on TV each year.
While attending USC to attain a Bachelor of Nursing degree, she met and married Bruce David Caton, while Bruce was serving in the US Navy. Their family was truly complete when they welcomed first David, and two years later Stephen Caton, and continued their lifelong love story for over sixty-seven years together.
After moving to Florida, each year the family drove four days to California and four days back, to visit Jo’s family. Each remembered those summer trips as hot, but many fun memories were made. In 1967 they moved to Texas and lived in Spring Branch. Jo took great pride in her lovely yard, with many blooming flowers and plants. She worked as a dedicated church secretary for many years.
giving heart who enjoyed teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and Bible Study Fellowship with Bruce over the years, and was still volunteering at Tallowwood Baptist Church in Spring Branch, up into her eighties. They taught their sons to be caring men, often volunteering with Mom and Dad to help those less fortunate.
Jo and Bruce loved to travel, and since Jo wasn’t comfortable flying, they had many driving trips: around Lake Superior, to Utah, Alaska, and along the East Coast. Bruce photographed God’s beauty in nature and Jo journaled each of the photos and the events of their trip. Dad loved to carefully research and plan each mile of every vacation and Mom packed organized totes of clothes and supplies, assuring fresh undies for every day as she was NOT doing laundry on a trip!
Jo had a very cheerful personality, and her history as a nurse helped her become a perfect patient in later years. Always appreciative and happy, she showed true unconditional love to everyone she met, and especially to her family and friends. She never judged anyone and showed that in many ways. However, she did sometimes chastise Bruce for eating too many almonds or sneaking dark chocolate. She was a very loving and supportive wife. They enjoyed watching golf, baseball, and every USC game on TV together, and loved reliving the memorable years when she and Bruce raised their two boys.
There were many family events and having Kara and Justin as grandchildren, and then Charlie Rose as a great-granddaughter was truly a joy to Jo. Pictures of Charlie and those that she created, were always Jo’s favorites. Every visit brought lots of smiles, and she loved hearing about Charlies’ latest adventures at school, in gymnastics, and outdoors.
Jo was preceded in death by her loving husband and adventure-lover Bruce. She is survived by sons David Edward Caton, Stephen Charles Caton and wife Kathy, granddaughter Kara and husband Aaron Donny-Clark, grandson Justin and wife Krista Sweidel, great-granddaughter Charlie Rose Sweidel, and nephews Jeff Irvin and Chris Irvin.
A small graveside service celebrating the life of Jo Ann Caton, devoted wife, loving mother, and loyal friend will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14th at 11:00 AM.
