Julie Ann Hogan, daughter of John and Kathryn Hogan, passed away August 27 at home of respiratory failure. Julie is survived by four brothers, Richard of Amissville, VA, Timothy of Elizabeth, IN, William of Fairfax, VA and Jeffrey of Katy, TX. Julie was born May 9 1946 in Wichita, KS and has been a resident of the Manassas area since opening her first professional boarding facility, Lake Jackson Kennel in 1972. Educated at George Mason University, she developed her teaching skills educating owners and dogs into extremely high competitive levels of obedience, tracking, conformation, agility, and canine nose work at both her kennel and classes at Northern Virginia Community College. Along the way she joined many professional associations, serving in many increasing responsible positions promoting “Springer Life”, including Mattaponi Kennel Club, Mid Atlantic Hunting Club, Potomac Valley English Springer Spaniel Club, and Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association.
Her coaching and judging skills enhanced her reputation as she traveled to participate in a variety of competitions across the US and Canada. She developed literally hundreds of friends all connected by Springer Spaniels. As if this wasn’t enough, she became a breeder of English Springer Spaniels and opened Pride ‘n Joy, in 1975 expanding her network of friends. One ”Happy” of her first pups made Julie the first in the state of Virginia to be awarded TDX (Tracking Dog Excellent). Together with another trainer they produced a total of 13 TDX, and over 40 TD’s (Tracking Dog) championships. certainly a major accomplishment. All the Championships and titles are through the American Kennel Club (AKC) recording their national requirements for each title.
In 2004 her new, state of the art kennel “Waggin’ Tails” was completed and her boarding and training activity moved to its present location.
As a point of personal privilege, I recall talking with Julie many years ago about how she trained obedience dogs for others. She told me her secret, “you don’t train the dog you train the owner/handler, it’s harder!”
9/24/2016 Funeral Mass is 9:00 AM, St Peter’s Catholic Church, Washington, VA, followed by reception 11:00 AM at Julie’s home in Nokesville.
Rest in Peace,
