Today, amidst warnings of a new hurricane nearing Houston, I attempted to call our dear friend, Ken, and was puzzled that I could not get through although I was certain that we had the correct number. I am shocked that he has passed away, shocked and saddened. When we performed our music in Houston, Ken was only became a stalwart friend and fan but, more importantly, time and time again exhibited his caring and sensitive nature. He was, in some fundamental senses, an underdog, an outsider, living at the time, inside a very insiders community. I have a feeling that very few of his professional and business associates ever got to know the very sophisticated, very artistic soul of this man for these qualities were often concealed under the shell of robust, more-than-salty comments. Yes, in a sense he was a personality magician, a survivor within different lifestyles and realities...and so often a witty and joyful and, yes, catty clown! God bless his soul. God bless those family members who survive him..as God has blessed us, the friends who knew him and laughed with him and cried with him and dreamed with him. I don't drink. But tonight Lynne and I will have a drink to his memory.
