In Memory of
Margaret Mary Cogwin
-

Margaret “Peggy” Mary Cogwin was born April 14, 1952 to Robert and Mary (Olsen) Hasselmeier, on Galveston Island, Texas, and passed away July 1, 2024 in Houston, Texas with her family by her side.  She was the youngest of three children including an older brother, Robert John and sister, Elizabeth Ann.  Peggy was proud to share she was a B.O.I. “born on the island” to mainlanders.

Peggy graduated from O’Connell High School in 1971 where she met and fell in love with John Michael “Mike” Cogwin III.  They were married on August 30, 1975.  Quickly after, 3 children joined them – John “Jack” Michael IV, Mark Carl, and Diann Marie as they settled in their new home in Houston, Texas.

Peggy was rarely without a smile or a laugh.  Taking care of her family was her priority; taking kids to sporting events, social activities, and breaking up the occasional fight between brothers with her wooden spoon.  She doted on her only daughter with whom she had a special bond.  She was a very proud Aggie Mom watching all three kids graduate from Texas A&M, and a welcoming mother-in-law.  In her empty nesting years, she served as an aide at Wunderlich Middle School where everyone who knew her loved her.  Peggy treasured hosting Christmas Eve celebration for the Hasslemeier family each year, a long-standing tradition, with the main highlight- a visit from Santa.

Her eight Grandchildren were the light of her life.  She was always sure to leave each visit with a gift for the grandkids, attending as many sporting events and extracurricular activities as she could.  Each July, she and Mike enjoyed taking the entire family to Galveston for a week’s stay at a bay house to share a little of their childhood with their grandkids including seafood boils, time on the beach, fishing off the pier, their favorite restaurants, and driving by their childhood home & stomping grounds.

All who knew Peggy loved her and will miss her smile and laugh.

Peggy was preceded in death by her father and mother, Robert & Mary Hasslemeier, and sister Liz Ann Adams.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Cogwin of Houston; children, Jack Cogwin and wife Veronica of Austin, Mark Cogwin and wife Marlene of Houston, Diann Veenstra and husband Adam of Houston; Grandchildren, John Michael Cogwin V, Cecilia Cogwin, Ana Sofia Cogwin, Lucia Cogwin, Victoria Cogwin, all of Austin, Maryellen Cogwin, Michael Cogwin, Evan Veenstra, all of Houston; her brother, R.J. and wife Jeanette Hasselmeier of Friendswood; as well as several nieces and nephews and friends who love her and will miss her dearly.

A rosary will be held Sunday, July 28, 2024 at 7 pm at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church 7810 Cypresswood Dr, Spring, TX 77379.  The Memorial Mass will be held Monday, July 29, 2024 at 11am at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church.  A private family burial will take place at a later date in Galveston.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to support Dr. Maria Alejandra Zarzour’s work at MD Anderson, Cancer Center, PO Box 4486 Houston, TX 77210-4486 or MDAnderson.org/Gifts.  The family is grateful for the support and care Dr. Zarzour (and the entire Zazour family) provided to Peggy and the family during her time of need.

Our prayers and deepest sympathy, Mike, and family! Peggy was so precious and loving, kind and caring, and a dear friend that will be missed. Even though we have not seen each other since our high school reunion, I will never forget how precious she was! We had great fun together in high school, we were in each others’ weddings, a great visit to ST Louis, Texas Vs. A&M game on Thanksgiving Day many years ago, and the memories go on & on! Peggy was so proud of her family! She was loved by everyone she met! Love you, Peggy🙏💕
