
Charles Wortham Spencer, born February 24,1914, age 97, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2011. Charles, a native Houstonian, affectionately known as "Chilie", graduated from San Jacinto High School, Houston University and attended Massey Business School. Charles worked with his father and brothers in the Spencer Sauer Lumber business for many years growing to more than twenty lumber yards in the state of Texas.
Charles rose to First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, proudly served in WW II, from 1942 - 1946, He fought on the front line, in The Battle of the Bulge. When recommended for The Purple Heart, Charles humbly declined, as he felt that his injuries were not severe enough to accept this great honor.
In 1946 Charles met and married Martha Ann Stanford, "the most beautiful girl he had ever seen." After a long illness, Martha predeceased Charles on November 19, 2000. Charles always had a zest for life, loved his family, friends, cruises and always a good drink or two.
Charles is survived by his three loving children, Florence Spencer Sparks, Trudy Spencer Price, husband, retired Chief, Chris Price, and Charles William Spencer, wife Sharon, eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Rosa for her special dedication and care for our father. Jennifer, Sylvia, Tia, Debbie, Susie, Alethia and Rev. Mary Lewis and all the angels at Gulf Coast Hospice of Houston. Thanks to Mrs. Cherrie and family at Tranquility Personal Care facility, Spring Branch, Texas, for providing a safe, clean environment, and all the loving kindness provided to our father, in his last eight days of his life.
Charles was laid to rest, at Forest Park Lawndale, in a beautiful private ceremony by Chaplain Mary Lewis.
Charles will be greatly missed by all those who dearly loved him.
